PE

Intent

At Brandesburton Primary School, our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. We aim to provide a broad and balanced range of sports and physical experiences that build confidence, resilience and physical competence.

Our curriculum is underpinned by six key aims:

  • Develop control, coordination and fluency in physical movement
  • Enable pupils to select and apply skills, tactics and strategies
  • Build the ability to evaluate and improve performance
  • Develop understanding of fitness, health and the effects of exercise
  • Promote independence, teamwork and positive communication
  • Ensure safe practice and responsibility for wellbeing

These aims are structured through progressive key concepts from EYFS to Year 6, with increasing complexity and application.
We are also committed to continually evolving our PE offer, regularly introducing new sports and activities to further enhance variety, engagement and inclusivity for all pupils.

Implementation

PE is delivered through a progressive two-year cycle (EYFS one-year cycle), aligned with the National Curriculum.

  • Each unit is taught over a 6-week sequence
  • Learning is built around:
    • Declarative knowledge (rules, tactics, understanding)
    • Procedural knowledge (physical skills and application)

Teachers use a Review, Revisit, Refresh approach to assess prior learning and ensure progression.

Curriculum Structure

Pupils experience a wide and continually developing range of sports:

  • Invasion games
  • Dance and gymnastics
  • Net/wall games
  • Striking and fielding
  • Target games
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Athletics
  • Swimming

The curriculum is regularly reviewed and adapted, with new sports introduced over time to broaden pupils’ experiences and maintain high levels of engagement.

Progression

  • EYFS: Focus on motor skills and personal development
  • KS1: Development of fundamental movement skills
  • KS2: Application of skills, tactics, rules and understanding of health

Enrichment

  • Sports Premium enhances provision through coaching and competitions
  • Daily Mile promotes regular activity
  • Extracurricular clubs and annual Sports Week broaden participation

Impact

The impact of the PE curriculum is demonstrated through pupils’ secure and progressive development of knowledge, skills, and understanding over time. Pupils build on prior learning, enabling them to become increasingly confident, competent, and active participants in a wide range of physical activities.

Assessment is used purposefully to check pupils’ knowledge, skills, and application:

  • Whole Class Assessment Grids are used to systematically track pupils’ attainment and progress against key learning.
  • Ongoing assessment informs responsive teaching, enabling teachers to address misconceptions, adapt learning, and provide targeted support where needed.
  • Subject leaders use assessment, pupil voice, and monitoring activities to evaluate how effectively the curriculum is being implemented and retained over time.

As a result, pupils:

  • Develop and apply a broad range of physical skills with increasing accuracy, control, and fluency.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of tactics, rules, and strategies, and can apply these effectively across different sports and activities.
  • Show improving knowledge of health, fitness, and the impact of physical activity on their bodies.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating resilience, respect, and sportsmanship.
  • Retain key knowledge and skills over time, enabling them to build on prior learning and make sustained progress.

The curriculum ensures that all pupils experience a wide and inclusive range of sports and physical activities. As a result, pupils leave Brandesburton Primary school with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to engage in lifelong participation in physical activity.
